Photographer Melissa Alicia Simpson is seeking Black women to participate in a portrait project centered on bedrooms as spaces of sanctuary, care, and self-preservation.

This series explores how Black women create beauty, peace, and grounding within their homes, even while carrying the weight of work, family, and community. Bedrooms are often the one place that belongs entirely to them. These spaces hold memory, resilience, and personal ritual.

Participants will be photographed in their bedrooms and invited to briefly share what makes the space meaningful to them. No perfection required. Just honesty and presence.

If you are an elder Black woman, or know someone who might be interested, please consider filling out the interest form or sharing it with someone you love.
